During the bulk of season 5 of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max find themselves trapped within a psychic prison forged from the recollections of Henry Creel. Their quest for a way out in the pivotal sixth episode has them experience a defining event from Henry's early years—a discovery that could contain the key to defeating him permanently.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Cavern

When she finds Max in the world known as Camazotz, it becomes clear she is taking refuge in a cave that Henry strangely fears. A clever observation a spyglass pilfered from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the true terror lies not within the cave. By aligning her view through the cap, she and Max plummet into a deep mine shaft.

There, they witness a child version of Henry find an man who is hurt and scared. As the boy offers aid, the man reacts violently, wounding the boy in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly wonders aloud. The answer is affirmative, but the trauma wasn't just a simple act of survival.

A Naval Mystery and Stolen Research

*The First Shadow* opens with the 1943 event, which transported a warship into a dimension dubbed the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who returned in a vegetative state with an entirely new blood.

That survivor's offspring, Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this dimensional breach in the Nevada desert. But a disloyal lab worker stole research materials to hand over to the Soviets, who were desperate to launch their own interdimensional projects. The man in the tunnel is that employee.

Unlocking the Mystery

Given what is revealed about Brenner's work, the container would assuredly have some of Captain Brenner's infected blood. In the scene, Henry is already bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon opening the case, causing the awakening of his powers—powers he would inadvertently transfer to the kids under Brenner's care.

Alternatively, the container could have held exotic matter that was destined to travel to Hawkins Laboratory, where it acts to anchor the mirror dimension. The stage play explains that young Henry ended up in the Abyss, reappearing hours later as a different person. From then on, he struggles with the influence of a dark entity, reminiscent of how Will Byers was possessed by the shadow monster in an earlier season.

A Weaponized Emotion

Henry's enduring terror of that cave demonstrates how utterly horrifying the encounter was for him. While he orchestrates the collective consciousness and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche remains. The villain weaponizes terror, and the show is setting up a final confrontation between Vecna and Will, who has confronted his greatest terrors to fortify himself.
