The Young Spinner Earns Unexpected Selection in English Test Series Team
England have chosen a 12-man selection just 48 hours before the opening Test match, with Shoaib Bashir securing a unexpected place.
Bashir's inclusion indicates that the visiting team will delay until the day of the initial match to determine whether the venue pitch suit four seamers or the inclusion of a spin bowler.
Both pace bowlers are part of the 12-man group, indicating there are no doubts about either pace bowler’s fitness.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse complete the bowling group, with Carse expected to be omitted if Bashir makes the starting XI.
Pitch Factors Lean Toward Seamers
Brendon McCullum had been expected to opt for an pace-only lineup on a venue that has staged several past matches.
In those matches, the majority of dismissals have fallen to seamers, with only 40 to spin bowling.
Of those spin dismissals, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has taken 29, while all visiting spinners together have only eight.
On a ground known for its pace and bounce, and whose curator, the pitch preparer, stated that these characteristics are “permanent and not going to change,” a team loaded with seamers remains the probable decision.
Spin Options Weighed
Previously there was rumors that Will Jacks could be brought into the team to provide some spin while additionally strengthening the lower order.
But McCullum has chosen to keep faith with the young spinner, having said earlier this year that he would be his first-choice slow bowler for the Ashes.
Earlier, Lyon described Bashir as “decent,” adding that “from my perspective, the experienced spinner is still England’s top slow bowler.”
“It is a huge responsibility, and it can be a significant test for people who haven’t done it in the previous in Australian pitches,” Lyon said of spin bowling in matches Down Under.
“I won't reveal my strategies so opponents come out and excel out here.”
