Shock as Beloved South African DJ Shot Dead in the Heart of Johannesburg.
A renowned South African radio and club DJ has been murdered in the nation's economic hub Johannesburg, causing national outrage across a country struggling with persistent crime.
Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was shot and killed in the downtown area on Tuesday afternoon.
Police said the forty-year-old presenter was accosted by three individuals, with one shot at him before escaping on foot.
The purpose of the shooting remains unclear and no one has been arrested are in custody, as per the official statement.
The Fatal Incident
Police revealed that Stock was ambushed as he was leaving a building close to the city center landmark.
He had devoted time at the property overseeing the setup of safety equipment, which had been reportedly taken over by unknown people, according to reports.
"It is alleged the deceased was confronted by three unknown suspects after he parked his car, and they shot at him before escaping on foot," a police statement confirmed.
Surveillance tape reportedly depicted a suspect with dreadlocked hair and wearing what resembled a guard's attire firing shots on Stock before making his escape.
The DJ attempted to flee after he was hit but succumbed to his injuries a short distance away.
It was further revealed that Stock had an unused firearm and nothing was taken during the assault.
Crucial forensic evidence, like cartridges, were discovered at the crime scene.
Investigation Ongoing
Authorities have requested eyewitnesses who may have have information to contact them.
"Our information indicates they covered significant ground after the shooting, and police have been tracking them to determine their whereabouts," remarked an authority figure.
A Nation in Mourning
His family member, Nicole Stock, expressed the family was struggling to understand the tragedy.
"I am devastated. I don't have words," she said.
"We know he was a voice for many people. He was a fearless commentator about topics not many people were ready to tackle. This is a tremendous loss."
She requested the public to refrain from sharing graphic images from the scene, noting this was an extremely painful time, especially for Stock's children.
A Multifaceted Career
Stock was the presenter of Ngicel' iVisa, a series that premiered on a South African digital satellite entertainment channel.
In addition to his role as a presenter, Stock was active in various commercial activities, including protective services, offering VIP protection services and protecting high-profile events across South Africa.
He was also said to be engaged in property management and participated in property reclaimations.
National Shock
His murder has caused national trauma and led to an outpouring of tributes from his followers, the government and political parties.
A cabinet official commented he was outraged and heartbroken by Stock's untimely death.
"He expressed his views boldly and honestly. He even challenged me and my decisions as a minister. He was a pure example of who we ought to be," the minister added.
A party figurehead commented the "shocking killing of DJ Warras in broad daylight is a trauma for all South Africans".
A media executive noted that "Stock was far beyond a TV personality. He was a gifted communicator, a dedicated enthusiast of music and a warm soul who brought joy and energy to every appearance. His commitment to his craft left an lasting impression."
In a communication, the network he worked for affirmed Stock was known for his magnetism, kindness and intelligent commentary, adding that his memory "will be remembered".
