Offspring of Ex- South African President Jacob G Zuma Rejects Terror-Related Charges as Trial Commences
The child of ex- South African Leader Zuma has pleaded not guilty to terrorism-related charges at the beginning of her court case in the harbor city of Durban.
Zuma-Sambudla, 43 years old, is being tried over comments she posted on digital networks several years back during violent unrest in South Africa that came after the detention of her father.
A period of anarchy in multiple regions of the country in July 2021, including plundering and intentional burning, caused at least 300 dead and led to damage worth an estimated $2.8bn (£2.2bn).
Zuma-Sambudla has been charged of fuelling this violence and is charged with accusations of provocation to commit terror-related activities and public violence.
History of the Proceedings
The demonstrations were concentrated in the areas of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal province and were triggered by the previous president's arrest for ignoring a judicial ruling to give evidence at an inquiry into allegations of graft while he was in power.
Ms Zuma-Sambudla has consistently rejected the allegations against her, with her attorney in the past calling the government's case as unsubstantiated.
She has also consistently said the charges against her were an effort to address political disputes with her dad after he founded his own political party and competed against the African National Congress.
Backing and Court Representation
This was echoed by the foundation, which claimed the proceedings was an "power abuse" and a "systematic campaign" of "politically motivated and family-related targeting" against the former president and his kin.
A few of backers from her political organization, the political party, gathered outside the provincial high court, while her dad and other party leaders participated in the hearings inside.
The defendant's representatives has stated that the evidence presented by prosecutors is inadequate and does not have concrete evidence for a conviction.
