Series Overview
Taking place within the world of King's It, Welcome to Derry is inspired by the classic book while enlarging the setting realized by director Andy Muschietti in the recent movie adaptations. The first It movie focused on kids and teens facing terrifying threats, so it’s fitting that the series follows in those footsteps. Yet, the first installment of HBO’s Welcome to Derry proves it aimed to escalate the fear, providing more frightening moments than the cinematic versions and establishing a dark atmosphere for the upcoming episodes.
Story World and Concepts
Located in the early '60s, this show presents a new generation of adults and children residing in a seemingly idyllic town masking a sinister core. Derry follows a vicious, repeating pattern—defined by violence, bigotry, and the supernatural, as a monstrous presence resurfaces every 27 years. While It: Welcome to Derry might appear like it leans too heavily to the cinematic adaptations at first, what differentiates the HBO Max series is its dual perspective—narrated via the eyes of both children and adults concurrently. Younger characters are highly exposed to the monster's horror, but grown-ups don't escape facing their own nightmares born from local discrimination and lurking supernatural forces.
The series premieres on October 31 at 12 a.m. Pacific Time.
