I thought I edged it - Carey on overturned decision.
Australia gloveman Alex Carey revealed he believed he had nicked the ball when he was reprieved on review on day one of the third Ashes series Test against England.
After surviving on 72, Carey proceeded to score a superb 106 to help the Australians post 326-8 at the close in the Adelaide Oval.
What happened?
The home side were 245-6 when Carey looked to play a cut to the bowling of Josh Tongue.
The England team lodged a strong appeal, certain they had heard an nick, but umpire Ahsan Raza remained unconvinced.
After skipper Ben Stokes challenged the decision, the footage examined by TV umpire Chris Gaffaney displayed a spike but this registered before the ball had reached the bat.
Gaffaney also said he believed there was a gap between bat and ball.
Therefore, Carey was allowed to continue.
"I thought there was a feather or some sort of noise when it passed the bat," commented Carey.
"If I was given out I think I would have reviewed it, probably not confidently. There was a definite noise."
Controversial 'Snicko'
Questions have been raised about 'the sound wave technology' during the Ashes contest after a several inconclusive incidents.
England's bowling coach David Saker indicated England may take this latest incident further with match referee Jeff Crowe.
"We haven't acted yet, but following today's events, that could change," Saker said.
"We've had doubts about it throughout. We shouldn't be talking about this after a day's play, it should just be better than that. It is what it is."
A Special Hundred
Carey's century was his maiden in the Ashes.
It was also an emotional moment for Carey, whose dad passed away in recent months. Carey's wife was crying in the crowd as the batter celebrated by glancing upward.
"Scoring a century at home with family watching was incredible," said Carey.
"I guess you know as well why I was looking to the heavens. I'm fighting back the tears. It was truly wonderful."
History of Controversy
Carey is not new to Ashes controversy.
He was the keeper who notoriously dismissed Jonny Bairstow at Lord's Cricket Ground in the 2023 Ashes series, leading to a febrile final day.
Speaking about his survival he added: "The sound wave didn't match up. That's cricket - you get the rub of the green sometimes."
"I might have gotten away with one."
