In a notable move for their rebuilding roster, the Chicago White Sox have welcomed slugger Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a $34 million contract with the accomplished player.

Contract Details and Player Perks

The agreement includes a $1 million signing bonus, issued within 30 days, combined with salaries of $16M for the 2026 season and $17M for the 2027 year.

Notably, Murakami's 2027 salary is subject to escalators based on award achievements in 2026:

  • $1 million for being named the Most Valuable Player award.
  • $500K for finishing second or third in MVP voting.
  • $250,000 for finishing between fourth and tenth.
  • $250,000 for being named the top rookie honor.

The agreement provides that he cannot be sent to the minors without his approval and makes him a free agent at the end of the deal. Further benefits include a club-supplied interpreter and airfare between the U.S. and Japan.

Murakami is set to become the fourth Japanese-born to play for the White Sox, in the footsteps of pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Of note, Takatsu once managed Murakami back in Japan.

On-Field Accomplishments

Murakami, a left-side batter who will turn 26 in February, bolsters a young lineup in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The club are finished with a last-place season, finishing last in the division but showing a significant improvement from the previous campaign.

A two-time Central League MVP honors in consecutive seasons, Murakami made history with a monumental 2022 season where he belted 56 homers, eclipsing the all-time record for a player in Japan previously held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That year also made him the youngest player ever to win Japan's prestigious batting Triple Crown.

His last year was curtailed to a partial schedule due to an side strain. Even with fanning 64 Ks, he hit .273 with 22 home runs and 47 RBIs.

Over his career tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has posted a .270 lifetime batting average with 246 HRs, 647 RBI, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in 892 games. Early in his career playing mostly at first, he has spent most of his time to the hot corner.

WBC Heroics

Murakami's big-game performance were on center stage during the last World Baseball Classic. In the semifinal against Mexico, he drove in a victory-sealing double that brought home Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a thrilling 6-5 win. The very next day in the final against the Team USA, he slugged a equalizing shot in the early innings, helping Japan's eventual title triumph.

The lefty slugger is set to be unveiled at a introductory event on the coming Monday.
