Anthony Barry Reveals His Vision: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.
A decade ago, the England assistant coach competed for Accrington Stanley. Currently, his attention is fixed to assist Thomas Tuchel claim the World Cup trophy next summer. His journey from player to coach started through volunteering for Accrington's Under-16s. He remembers, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and it captivated him. He discovered his calling.
Metoric Climb
The coach's journey is incredible. Beginning in a senior role at Wigan, he built a reputation for innovative drills and strong interpersonal abilities. His stints with teams included top European clubs, plus he took on coaching jobs abroad with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He's coached big names such as world-class talents. Today, as part of Team England, it’s full-time, the peak in his words.
“Dreams are the starting point … But I’m a believer that obsession can move mountains. You have the dream and then you plan: ‘How can we achieve it, day-by-day, step-by-step?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. But dreams won’t get it done. We have to build a systematic approach so we can to have the best chance.”
Focus on Minutiae
Obsession, particularly on fine points, is central to his philosophy. Working every hour all the time, he and Tuchel push hard at comfort zones. The approach involve mental assessments, a heat-proof game model ahead of the tournament in North America, and building a true team. The coach highlights “Team England” and rejects terms such as "break".
“This isn't a vacation or a break,” he explains. “We needed to create an environment that the players want to be part of and, secondly, they feel so stretched that going back is a relief.”
Greedy Coaches
He characterizes himself and Tuchel as “very greedy”. “Our goal is to master all parts of the match,” he states. “We seek to command every metre of the pitch and we dedicate long hours toward. Our responsibility not just to keep up of changes and to lead and create our own ones. This is continuous with a mindset of solving issues. And it’s to make the complex clear.
“There are 50 days together with the team prior to the World Cup. We have to play an intricate approach that offers a strategic upper hand and we must clarify it in our 50 days with them. It's about moving it from thought to data to knowledge to execution.
“To build a methodology for effective use in the 50 days, it's crucial to employ the entire 500 days we'll have from when we started. In the time we don’t have the players, we need to foster connections with each player. We have to spend time on the phone with them, we need to watch them play, sense their presence. If we just use the 50 days, we have no chance.”
Upcoming Matches
He is getting ready ahead of the concluding matches of World Cup qualifiers – facing Serbia at home and in Albania. They've already ensured a spot in the tournament by winning all six games and six clean sheets. Yet, no let-up is planned; quite the opposite. Now is the moment to build on the team's style, to gain more impetus.
“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that the football philosophy should represent all the positives from the top division,” Barry explains. “The physicality, the flexibility, the strength, the honesty. The England jersey should be harder than ever to get but comfortable to have on. It must resemble a cloak and not body armour.
“To make it light, we need to provide a system that lets them to operate like they do every week, that resonates with them and lets them release restrictions. They should overthink less and focus more on action.
“You can gain psychological edges for managers in attack and defense – playing out from the back, attacking high up. Yet, in the central zone in that part of the ground, we believe play has stagnated, notably in domestic leagues. Coaches have extensive data these days. They can organize – mid-blocks, deep blocks. We are focusing to increase tempo through midfield.”
Drive for Growth
Barry’s hunger for development is relentless. During his education for the Uefa pro licence, he was worried regarding the final talk, as his cohort included stars including former players. To enhance his abilities, he sought out tough situations imaginable to hone his presentations. One was HMP Walton in his home city of Liverpool, and he trained detainees for a training session.
He completed the course with top honors, and his dissertation – focusing on set-pieces, for which he analysed numerous set-plays – became a published work. Lampard included won over and he hired Barry on to his staff at Chelsea. When Lampard was sacked, it spoke volumes that Chelsea removed virtually all of his coaches except Barry.
His replacement at Stamford Bridge took over, within months, they claimed the Champions League. When Tuchel was dismissed, Barry stayed on with Potter. But when Tuchel re-emerged at Munich, he recruited Barry of Chelsea to rejoin him. The FA consider them a duo similar to Southgate and Holland.
