The event happened on Monday morning when an IED planted beneath a vehicle detonated, leading to the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.

Sarvarov was the head of the armed forces' operational training department.

Investigators stated that one line of inquiry points to the potential involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. To date, Ukraine has not issued a comment.

Location of the Incident

Personnel have been dispatched to the site, which is said to be in a southern district of the metropolis.

Reports indicate the blast occurred in a vehicle lot near a residential building.

Series of Targeted Attacks

Since the beginning of the large-scale conflict in Ukraine, a series of Russian military personnel have been subjected to assaults within Moscow.

This most recent event follows other high-profile incidents, including:

  • General Yaroslav Moskalik was lost his life in a vehicle explosion in Moscow earlier this year.
  • General Igor Kirillov died in late 2024 when a explosive hidden on a scooter was set off from a distance.

While a informant earlier linked Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such claims are never publicly admitted as a matter of policy.

The war has been marked by covert operations moving into the center of the Russian capital.

The examination into General Sarvarov's death is still active.
